Chiropractic Approved Tips to Help Manage Arthritis Pain and Prevent Progression

Arthritis is a relatively common condition that affects your joints. Unfortunately, if you are dealing with arthritis, it can make so many aspects of your life difficult. Not only does the condition cause discomfort and pain, but it can also make it tougher to exercise, live the lifestyle you want, and perform many day-to-day tasks. As a result, arthritis can also have a negative effect on your mood. When it hurts to do the things you want to do, this can leave you feeling discouraged, upset, or even depressed.

The good news is that there are ways to manage arthritis pain and prevent it from worsening.

What Is Arthritis?

Arthritis is inflammation or swelling in the joins. However, it is not a single disease or condition. There are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. These conditions affect the joins, the tissues around the joints, and other connective tissues.

Types of Arthritis

There are many different types of arthritis that affect people in many different ways. Some of the most common include osteoarthritis, autoimmune inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, infectious arthritis, and metabolic arthritis. However, there are many other types as well.

Depending on the type of arthritis and your particular situation, symptoms will vary. However, in most cases, people with arthritis experience joint stiffness and pain.

Symptoms

Each type of arthritis is different, but there are some common signs and symptoms that are often present in those who are dealing with this condition. They include pain and stiffness in and around the joints, as well as swelling, redness, and decreased range of motion.

Arthritis symptoms can make it difficult to do many daily tasks and can even make it painful or uncomfortable to walk or sit up straight. Over time, your joints can potentially lose their shape and alignment. Therefore, it’s important that people who are dealing with arthritis work to manage the pain and prevent progression.

Tips for Pain Management

There are many different ways to care for arthritis pain. Therefore, it’s a good idea to learn as much about your condition as possible, since this can help guide you to the right treatment. Once you know the type of arthritis you have, the current condition of your joints, and much more, you can focus on strategies to help you find relief.

Exercise

Safe exercises can help improve your range of motion and overall health. This will build the muscles in your body, giving your joints more support. Walking, biking, and swimming are good options for most people. You may want to avoid exercises that involve repetitive motion and high impact.

Weight Management

Excess weight can put additional stress on your joints. Eating a healthy diet and getting enough physical activity can help you manage your weight.

Mobility

Arthritis can make it tough to move around. However, maintaining your range of motion and flexibility is important. Stretching, yoga, and other such exercises can help you maintain your mobility while also improving your mood.

Manual Therapy

Massage and other types of manual therapy can be helpful. Working with an experienced professional who understands your condition can help reduce pain and stiffness.

Heat and Cold

You might be able to find relief by applying heat or cold to the affected areas. In general, ice is helpful with pain while heat can relieve stiffness. Taking a hot bath or shower can also be very helpful and soothing.
